Like a lot of people in pet friendly Austin, I am a big animal lover! I have the privilege of "being owned" by two beautiful retired racing greyhounds, three greyhound-bullying cats, and some fish. All of them (well, not the fish!) came from animal rescue groups that do a fantastic job at helping animals in need, and I feel strongly about helping these groups back.
I first found out about retired racing greyhounds 15 years ago. I had never had a dog before in my life (I had always been more of a cat person) but I felt I was ready to take on the responsibility of caring for a dog, and I knew I wanted to rescue a dog in need of a home. After doing a little research on dog breeds and dog rescue organizations, I felt that a retired greyhound might be a good choice for me, although I will admit I initially did think they looked kind of skinny and a little weird with their long noses and never-ending legs! Then one day I met a 3-year-old brindle greyhound—I eventually adopted and named Jazz—at a local greyhound rescue adoption event. Jazz taught me how to truly appreciate the beauty and gentle personality of greyhounds, and I have loved greyhounds ever since.
In addition to my greyhounds and "personal cats," as I like to call them, I also care for several feral cats who are part of the Austin Humane Society’s Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Program. Thanks to this wonderful program and the many people involved, thousands of feral cats are spayed and neutered free of charge every year before being released back with their colonies, which are taken care off by volunteers. This greatly reduces the city’s cat overpopulation, which sadly is the leading cause of cat euthanasia.
I support animal rescue organizations and I will donate 5% of all my commissions to the following groups*:
Greyhound Pets of America-Central Texas
Austin Greyhound Adoption
The Austin Humane Society's Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Program
*If you have a favorite animal rescue group, whether it is one of these three or another local group you'd like to support, let me know, and I will donate 5% of your entire transaction’s commission to this particular organization.
If you are considering adding a new pet to your family, please adopt from a shelter or animal rescue group.
